The European Commission should urgently set up a system of safeguards and a certification process to ensure biofuels used in Europe meet high environmental standards according to three environmental groups.
[mailchimp_signup][/mailchimp_signup]In a letter to Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, Birdlife International, EEB and T&E call on the Commission to set-up a group including industry, agriculture, and environment experts to kick-off the process.
The three groups have warned that without safeguards and certification systems, biofuels have the potential to do more environmental damage than the conventional fuels they are designed to replace.
The letter is a follow-up to a high-level conference on the issue held in June 2006.
